Brief History of Freemasonry in the Eastern Cape Province
The first Netherlandic Lodge established in Port Elizabeth was Lodge Fidelity No 34 in 1925. Subsequently, Lodge The Settlers No 38 was founded in Grahamstown, Lodge Milton in Queenstown in 1936, and shortly after World War II, Lodge Royal Protea No 55 in East London in 1947.
In 1957, the second Netherlandic lodge was consecrated in Port Elizabeth, Lodge Bartholomeus Diaz No 72. The year 1958 witnessed the establishment of Lodge Sterkstroom No 83 in Sterkstroom, and in 1973, Lodge Kramberg No 112 in Aliwal North. These lodges operated under the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Southern Division, based in Cape Town.
The lodges in the Eastern Cape aspired to function independently and successfully lobbied for their own division. On March 23, 2002, the Provincial Grand Lodge of the Eastern Cape Division was officially established, and RW Bro Johan Greyling was invested as Provincial Grand Master by the then Grand Master, MW Bro Ben Lindeque. This significant event took place in East London, and on the same day, Lodge Coelacanth No 137 was inaugurated and consecrated with high hopes.
Today, the Eastern Cape Division thrives as a vibrant brotherhood of men from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds.
